location of crank timing marks s60 2.5T

Post by projectPONY »

Greetings all, I'm here in search of info as to where I can find this darn timing marks on the crank gear. For the life of me, I don't see them! I need to locate them so I can button up this project. I was able to remove the belt WITHOUT having to remove the crank pulley via belt guard/shield. So that leads me to think that the marks are behind/under the crank pulley. Hope someone can help me, I'm ready to be done with this.

Don't feel bad, it took me a while to find them the first time, and I've been doing this car thing a while.
The marks on the pulley (there are two of them) are actually small cuts into the face of two neighboring teeth on the pulley, on the side of the pulley closest to the engine block. When you look down from the top of the engine, at the pulley, the pointer on the block is at the far left of the opening you are looking down into (attention Volvo: This design was a dumb idea. They could have just as easily been in the middle, where we could see them...). It is part of the block casting, and protrudes out from the block. You're lined up when the pointer cast in the block points to the gap between the two marked pulley teeth. Something like: I V I (the "I's" are the notches in the pulley's teeth, and the "V" is the pointer on the block).

Now, to see all that, you'll need a bright light that shines way down in there. I use an LED keychain light, and slide it as far down in there as I can reach, while turning the pulley nut with a 30mm socket on a 24" extension....easier if you can get someone else to turn while you watch.

The factory directions say that once you find the I V I to go a 1/4 revolution past the marks, and then rotate the engine backwards (counter-clockwise) until the I V I is correct. This takes the slack out of the gear train.

Happy Motoring!
