Be careful about this advice - it is crucial to know that the crank mark does *not* put any cylinders at top dead center (TDC). If you try to use TDC to set the timing on these engines, the timing will be off and you can bend valves and ruin the head.

Put the crank on the mark yes, for sure that is the key and the first thing to do if you go with that method. But the whole reason you want the crank on the mark is precisely because at that position, *none* of the cylinders are at TDC. It puts #1 up high, but a few degrees shy of TDC. The others are all well off of TDC. Putting the crank on the mark ensures that you can move the cams freely, without valves hitting pistons.

For OP, as he turns the crank to get it on the mark, he is likely to meet resistance from cylinders hitting the valves. So he will have to fiddle with (rotate) the cams too during the process of aligning the crank, he can't expect to simply move the crank to the mark with no issues. If he can, great! But likely he can't.
THIS!!!

All references to TDC should be stripped from this and ALL threads. It will cause NOTHING but trouble.

I've lined up all the markings and it won't start I've tried turning it over and nothing happens it's sounds like it trying to start but nothing happens.I'm just worried that since it's an interference motor that my head is destroyed

When you lined it all up, did you
(1) get the crank to the mark then
(2) use the slots on the rear of the cams to get them in place?
If you did that without trying to start it, then the head is OK.

Probably the next step is 1 teaspoon of oil in each cylinder - read about "lawn mower syndrome."

But first: is that how it went, when you were getting things back on the mark?

ALSO, Robert's question is important: when the water pump went out, did the engine/belt ever jump time?

When I say lined up I mean the crank lined up with its mark and the cam marks lined up to the notches on the timing cover then I pulled the number one spark plug to see where the piston was at it was all the way up so I put it back and tried to start it and it sounded like it was dry running so I stopped now I'm stumped

People have been missing this step recently: before starting the engine after timing work always rotate it by hand at least twice. If there's anything off you'll catch it then instead of ruining anything by trying to start it. And you should have had the spark plugs out already while you were lining everything up.

You still have not answered Robert's question about the water pump.

Did you add oil to each cylinder?

OP, I don't really know what that post means.

But hopefully you are looking into lawn mower syndrome, and trying the oil in each cylinder. If you want more help, let us know what you want help with.

Okay so I don't think I'm being clear. I had a fractured radiator and then not soon after the water pump started to leak out of the pulley the car still ran at this point no jumped timing . so I proceeded with a coolant overhaul radiator thermostat water pump,hoses and thermo housing. To get to the water pump I removed the damper pulley to get the tools in I DID NOT SET THE TIMING TO TDC.I cut the belt off b/c of a shield below the crank pulley was mangled and it wouldnt let me remove the belt now I don't know who worked on this car before me but the only.marks on the CAM pulleys were little Ms no arrows no scratches just these little M so I used those to set the cam pulleys now down on the CRANK pulley I noticed a tooth that was wider than the rest I used that to set the crank timing. THEN I TURNED THE MOTOR BY HAND And I felt some resistance but it only felt like compression resistance but it still turned without becoming jammed up so I tried to turn the motor over and it sounded like a motor that wasn't getting gas I have never heard of lawn mower syndrome so no I didn't put oil in the cylinders I don't even know how to turn a motor from the back considering there's a tranny and a distributor cap in my way the marks on the cams are gone the mark on the crank looks like an extra wide tooth I'm pretty sure the head is done for and I think I'm gonna have this car cubed and scrapped for an American POS with a non interference motor
