Alright, enjoy.
What polskamafia said. The thread title may have been correct after all.

Over the last 3 pages, there's probably enough info to get you up and running, if you follow the advice, check the things that people mention, and follow the experienced guys' advice to a T. But, if you want to switch to gas-guzzling US car, with an oversized and underpowered engine, then by all means. But put your Volvo up on CL, FFS, so someone who knows what they're doing and/or wants to put a little effort and reading in can have a shot at it.

I had a fractured radiator and then not soon after the water pump started to leak out of the pulley the car still ran at this point no jumped timing . so I proceeded with a coolant overhaul radiator thermostat water pump, hoses and thermo housing. To get to the water pump I removed the damper pulley to get the tools in I DID NOT SET THE TIMING TO TDC.I cut the belt off b/c of a shield below the crank pulley was mangled and it wouldnt let me remove the belt now I don't know who worked on this car before me but the only.marks on the CAM pulleys were little Ms no arrows no scratches just these little M so I used those to set the cam pulleys now down on the CRANK pulley I noticed a tooth that was wider than the rest I used that to set the crank timing. THEN I TURNED THE MOTOR BY HAND And I felt some resistance but it only felt like compression resistance but it still turned without becoming jammed up so I tried to turn the motor over and it sounded like a motor that wasn't getting gas I have never heard of lawn mower syndrome so no I didn't put oil in the cylinders I don't even know how to turn a motor from the back considering there's a tranny and a distributor cap in my way the marks on the cams are gone the mark on the crank looks like an extra wide tooth I'm pretty sure the head is done for and I think I'm gonna have this car cubed and scrapped for an American POS with a non interference motor
If you haven't started the car since doing this job, there is no way the head could be "done for." The lawnmower syndrome can be a result to trying to crank over the motor and it not starting... you're likely flooding the cylinders. Read into it, there is plenty of information on this forum.
Now, as for the crank and cams. Each cam sprocket has a little notch in the side. There is no way they don't, unless for some ridiculous reason they were replaced with aftermarket units that for some reason didn't have that. Those notches are to be lines up with the timing marks on the cam cover, like you said. The crankshaft pulley has two small notches on top of the teeth, they are to line up around the mark on the oil pump. I believe the harmonic balancer also has a mark that lines up in between the sprocket marks and in-line with the mark on the oil pump. This is how everything should line up:

I agree with polskamafia and Sommerfeldt. Read over everyone's suggestions!!! I'm having a similar problem with my cousin's car, and I totally understand your frustration, but don't get mad at us about it. And if you decide to get rid of it, sell it to someone who can fix it, don't scrap it. You may be the reason that I can get parts from the junkyard, but also the reason these great cars are disappearing.
