Pull a vacuum on the tailpipe, and where do I input the smoke?dosbricks wrote:To avoid the uncomfortable situation of crawling under the car while the engine is running, some folks have pulled a vacuum on the tailpipe with a shop vac and used cigar smoke to locate leaks (visual evidence being more definitive). Of course if the evap system is leaking fumes around the fuel tank, it's better to have your wife stand outside the car and blow the cigar smoke through a hose.

Puff up a mouthful (don't inhale, it's bad for your health) and blow little clouds of smoke all along the tailpipe while watching for any leak where it is getting rapidly sucked inside. Remember, there could be more than one leak. Naturally the car needs to be jacked up and supported with jack stands in a windless area.
