1996 850 na m/t cv joint

Post by tomstir »

Hey gang-
I just got done trying to find the reason for a clunk in the front right of my 850. The outer cv boot is split in 2 with grease flung all over wheel well. There is still some grease on the bearings and the wheel seems to spin freely without any noises. I'm wondering if I've damaged the bearings? I have been hearing the noisewhen first starting out in the day for about a month now. Another question I have is about it being a non-turbo with a manual transmission. I did some research that said the turbo cars had larger axles/more splines. I tried to cross reference on rock auto and it shows they are the same. Does anyone know? If I haven't done any damage to the bearing then the boot rebuild kit would be great. Are they specific to my car too? Thanks

Finding good replacement axles is really hit or miss and they are a pain in the butt to replace if you get a bad one. If your axle isn't clacking then just reboot it. NAPA has all of the boot varieties from GKN Lobro which are the good ones. On the manual transmission axle the inner CV joint boot is different than the automatics on some versions of the axle.

I fought with an inner CV boot for an hour or so on my XC before it became obvious that it wasn't the correct boot. It turns out that the axle had been replaced with an axle from a manual transmission car which is why the parts never came up right on the NAPA computer but they had the correct boot in stock and just did an exchange.

How long ago did you find GKN/Loebro boots in stock at NAPA?

No joy at all from either local NAPA stores closeby in Austin.

Please advise!

The key thing you want to check is the diameter of the outer axle shaft, between the two CV joints. It is either 24 mm or 33 mm, get a cheap calipers in there and just measure. That will tell you exactly which boots you need. Check out this thread if you haven't already: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=73298.

If you 96 NA has the 24 mm axles, you can just get the Lobro boots from AutohausAZ e.g. https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=68802 (be sure to read through the whole thread).

The local napa had the gkn for $23 ea. inner p/n 300497. Outer p/n 300427. I picked up a pair last night. Just went to start and it looks like there is two diff size holes in each boot. I have a mt and the axles are 33mm. Inner small hole is 27 mm. Inner large hole is 70mm. Outer small hole is 21 mm. Outer large hole is 80 mm. Is that correct? I tried to look up the dimensions but couldn't open up the page from the link. I called Napa and he is ordering another pair. I'm thinking maybe someone mixed up the parts Also both boots have the same shape. I thought there were two very distinct shapes?

I was able to open the link for gkn and was a little off compared to their measurements. Theirs are inner boot holes 28/70. Outer boot holes 22/82. I'm going to tear this one out and see if I did get the correct parts. I'm still concerned about the shapes. I think the outer had a diff shape because of the need to articulate more. I can't remember but I'm sure it was posted about from one of you guys.

Had some house issues and forgot to finish up here
I couldn't get the clip off...... then ended up breaking it!!!!! With nothing to grab and time running out I weenied out too!!!! Got a reman at orielly ( we'll see if that works out)!!!!!! Changed both control arms too. Still have wierd knock/clunk!!!!! I took it in to get aligned and the tech told me that he thinks it's my coil spring moving around. It's riding up on the stopper lip of the saddle and then coming down which makes the sound. Does anyone know if thats common? Correct? Fixable?Unfortunately with the house issues and doing the brakes on my wife's car I haven't had much time. If I don't get any responses I'll start a new thread.
Ps.....hey cn90. Not only have you helped my out here, for a number of years you have also helped me out on our old e39. Thanks!!!

Spring seat is probably broken.
Replace both either with OEM or IPD HD

I hope not. I replaced them a few years ago. Along with new ipd lowering springs and Koni shocks. It really feels more in thelower part of the steering/suspension I did try to turn the tip of the shock and it is firm and doesn't spin. Does anyone else notice if their springs rotate a bit?
