Supposedly it is backwards compatible with Dexron but I wouldn't stake my life on that claim.

There is an interesting thread here with some additional links:

It will work. Volvo had a bulletin 16 years or so ago to address a grating noise or lockup torque converter chatter (two different problems) on 4 speed auto 97-99 models. The fix was to drain and refill the lost quantity with the then new 1161540 trans fluid which is the 3309 stuff.

3309 has all the special sauces that older gearboxes take and adds some spices and snake oil that address things that transmissions with slipping lockup torque converters would otherwise have w/o those special spices.

Personally, I wouldn't use it- I use Mobile 1 synthetic ATF in my '98 S70 tranny. It works great and it's better than the stuff your dad gave you in my opinion. Post up for sale or trade!! In fact, I'd be interested (for our later model V70 and S60)!!!

I second the M1 Synthetic ATF. It's expensive, but it's been helping my transmission run well in old age for many years now.

+1. Keeping mine going too!

Don't spill it. It's a hard smell to get rid of...

You can use 3309 in the car, but DON"T MIX IT with Dexron. Completley drain and fill it. I called Mobil tech support a few years ago and asked. The two are not compatible.

2017 Alfa Romeo Giulia Q2 - Totaled in 2022. Not my fault.
2011 XC60 - sold
2000 V70XC - given to a friend, wish I still had it.
