A bad J hose, which causes a massive vacuum leak, would cause this. A loose bad cap, no.

The EVAP purge system is part of the vacuum system check recommended above. It's not glamorous and it's a labor intensive job, but it probably covers 80% of running annoyances.

I was wondering about the J hose. Another thing popped up running the kids to school this morning...I got the illuminated orange triangle and the message said Loose or Missing Fuel Cap.....that was on for a couple of minutes, then went off.

When I got home, the fuel cap was not very tight. I am in Oregon, where we do not pump our own gas...and I was able to tighten the cap almost a quarter turn.

I'll start researching the process of replacing the J hose........

Thanks abscate!

I think on your car the EVAP container will be under the right rear wheel area - not in the front fender like the earlier P80 cars

There is quite a bit of hosiery down there.. (cute spell check)

On an '01 V70 T5, the Jhose and evap canister are directly above the rear suspension at the center of the car. It can be done without dropping the subframe with patience. The part is cheap, the job itself is a pain.

Drop the hangers for the muffler, pull the exhaust heat shields out, drop the exhaust hangers forward of the rear suspension and then pull the exhaust down and tie it off to one side to get the best access possible to the hose. The factory clamps are crimped, not screw type so they may have to be destructively removed.

If it is the stereotypical leak, you'll find cracks in the curve of the j, right next to where the clamp is.

J-hose on order. I've read some posts on replacing the J-hose. I'm going to crawl under the car later and try to get a lay of the land. Is it recommended to replace the clip-type hose clamp with a more common screw-type hose clamp? Sounds like a great project for the upcoming 3-day weekend.

I used the normal screw type and haven't had any problems. Or you could use the fuel injection hose type that dig into the rubber less.

Ok, backed the car up on ramps and easily can see the J-Hose. There is a visible split in the end at the canister. It's almost maddening how easy it is to see and hard it is to get to. The hose clamp is not at the right angle to get at from the bottom.

01_Nautic_V70 - I can see where removing the exhaust hanger brackets and lowering the muffler and the heat shroud would allow for access. BUT...my exhaust system is a continuous welded pipe....if I take the hanger brackets off, will the muffler come low enough for access?

I've got the exhaust hangers off....the pipe from the resonator is hitting the cross brace limiting how far the muffler will drop. And the heat shield doesn't come all the way out. It looks to be riveted to one of the suspension pieces. If not for that, I'm pretty sure I'd have good access to the j-hose. Anybody been here before? Thanks!

I've called it a night...going to think how I can get to it and attack it in the morning. In the mean time I've been searching Google for how to curse in Swedish.

It's " Svenksa Magnetti Marelli" and it loosely translates as "may Swedish fish infest your catalytic converter"
