2003 XC70 AC not getting cold.

Post by Molly »

I just got this car a couple of months ago. I am now using the AC, and it doesn't get cold for about 10 minutes. It has only 30,000 miles on it. Can anybody help?

Is the AC compressor cycling (turning on and off) every few seconds when the AC is on max cool?

Will the AC blow cold if you let the car idle instead of driving or revving the engine?

Have you read through the sticky on AC issues?

The AC does not cycle on and off. When I idle, it doesn't get cold. In fact, it's blowing out hot air. I looked at the topics that Matt has, and I didn't see my problem. Is that what the sticky is?

When you say it takes 10 minutes before it gets cold, do you mean that it is a very very gradual lowering of the temperature or is that the car runs for 10 minutes and all of a sudden she blows cold? If it's the former, I think I'd suspect a low charge of the system. You can buy a gauge kinda like a tire gauge and check to see if you have the 28 to 34psi in the system...

Yes that's what the "sticky" is... that A/C thread.

With it not cooling while idling there could be a few different things that could be wrong. The Volvo AC is one of the most complex AC systems in automobiles. This is one of the few areas I do not work on, I have found it cheaper to swallow the bullet and let a pro work on it. It may be something as simple as adding refrigerant or it may be more complex.

The AC Tread stick is the very first thread in this forum.

There is no gradual lowering of the temperature. It's hot, then it's cold.

It sounds as if you low in freon, have a competent mechanic evac and charge the system and make sure he puts dye in it so when (if) it gets low again they can shine a black light to see where your leak is coming from.
These cars do not suffer bad evapoators as the early cars did, so you probably have a refrigerant leak for whatever reason.

P.S. you're in the wrong forum, this is the 93-2000 forum, yours (P2 cars) is below
