Liftgate lock stuck 98 V70

The lock on my V70s liftgate/tailgate hatch won't unlock. I have removed the interior trim and unbolted the strikeplate from the body, so I can at least open the hatch. The visible parts of the lock and door handle all appear to work perfectly and yet the lock won't release.
How can I open the lock? If I can't , can I remove the lock mechanism and replace it (along with the strikeplate)? I have 3 pictures of the above at flickr.com, search for oliva732000, then scroll past the cats and scenery.

I went ahead and had my mechanic replace the lock- $162 for the part and ~$50 for labour.
