The key in does go through the electrical portion of the switch. Key in closes the contact between pins 30 and S. Your problem is not a typical electrical portion of the switch failure though. Normally a whole slew of other problems crop up with the switch way before a key in reminder problem.

"Not typical"... just my luck...Ozark Lee wrote:Key in closes the contact between pins 30 and S. Your problem is not a typical electrical portion of the switch failure though.

It looks like the switch is labeled so I can remove it and test it. This one is $84 at "NextDayAuto".

Late follow-up on this problem... I replaced the mechanical key switch and the electrical switch shown above. The chime still rings with the key out of the ignition and door open. The chime goes out when the door is shut.
What part do I replace next?

Okay, are you sure it's not simply a door chime? And b), is there something stopping you from simply ripping the chime out of there all together?
I know you americans are just brainwashed on the chime things - everything dings, bongs, pings and hoots over there, depending on what you do or don't, but I've never had a car that says anything when I leave my key or sit waiting for my gf with the door open. So it can be done!

Then it's back to the same question... are you sure it's not simply wired as a door chime?
Since there are 2 conditions to account for when the chime works as "it's supposed to", it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.
1: Power when door open AND key in ignition.
2: No power when door open, NO key in ignition.
3: No Power when door closed, key IN ignition.
4: No power when door closed, NO key in ignition.
So, from that, there seems to be only 2 options.
1: Your chime is wired correctly, but a switch activated by the key's presence or absence is malfunctioning.
2: Your chime is wired incorrectly, as a door chime only.
One of those is necessarily true, whatever reason is behind the behavior. Since you've changed out some parts already, your most efficient way of tracing this is to find the actual wiring for the chime, and see what's actually going on there.

The more I've looked over the diagram and reread your description,
the more I'm leaning towards a funky chime module. The switches
all sound like they work and your interior lights are happy. So...
I'd suggest ideally snagging a known good one or just get a
J/Y chime and try swapping that sucker out.
