My window doesn´t open all the way

Post by Clemens »

So suddenly I couldn´t open the driver´s side window on my 96 R all the way. It moves up and down freely, but only to a certain point. It seems to be mechanically blocked by something. Before taking the door panel off: is there anything I can expect in there to be screwed up or broken where it would be nice to have spare parts before chasing parts with a car without a door panel on?

Thanks, Clemens

Agree- sounds like something's blocking it. There are no wires- it's a scissor design. What happens if you help it with pulling up on the glass? Does the motor make a struggling sound?

gotta try that. I doubt it, because the upper 80% of the way the window it moves up and down it moves freely and as fast as usual. It just come to a stop like 2 or3 inches too early, accompanied by a loud "clonk".

I went through this before with my 1998 S70 (your 850 is similar with minor differences).
I posted the info in the thread below...

The quality of DIY info on this forum is just amazing, better than any other car forum I've seen.

yeah! I totally agree. Also, the willingness of People to help is unmatched. I´ve been on alot of forums due to different makes over the years, but this one is outstanding.

My bet is that the lower track has broken at the point where it anchors to the rear of the door (where the loose screw was noted in the thread that was linked above). The design is terrible and it is essentially a strap that is about as thick as a tin can that anchors with that screw. I have successfully repaired the broken track but it was a fair amount of effort involved and it took silver solder and an oxygen / acetylene torch to do it.

So I finally took the door panel off and found this guide rail loose:

After removing it the window would open and close as normal. Since nothing rattles or moves incorrectly I´m tempted to leave it as is. But usually cars arent built with alot of redundency, so I´m wondering what to do. I guess the rail is supposed to go where the door latch mecahnism is, and I think this is quite timeconsuming to fix. I did the windows on my 72 Lincoln twice, what a pita.

Any thoughts?
