04 S40 steering wheel shakes when driving at highway speeds

Post by sjanegray »

I am starting to really get frustrated here. I have been bouncing back and forth between the tire dealer and Volvo for the better part of today.
Let me back up.. I brought the car to Volvo dealer 05/01 for severe shaking and humming noise, they told me I need 4 tires, I bought 4 tires, at Town Fair Tire, and the problem didn't stop. Went back to Volvo Dealer they said change the fuel filter and spark plugs. That work was completed. Again to no avail. Went back to dealer, 3rd time was a charm... I needed new left and right front axles. Got the car back yesterday and still have an issue with shaking. I drove with the Service Manager and he said that I needed to re-balance and re-align the car (2 ond time) Got tires re-balanced and another alignment. Still didn't fix it. While at the Tire dealer the techs noticed that the cotter pin was missing on front axles. I called Volvo Service from the tire dealer and Volvo Said they don't use them. Ironically a 02 S40 came to the tire dealer for a rear flat and they checked her car, she had the cotter pins. I left and Went to Volvo, they "inspected" and sent me on my way back to tire place saying the tires were the problem. So then I Got new tires 2 weeks after 1st set and still the steering wheel shakes at highway speeds. Tire place said it's not the tires its the car.. Volvo Said not the car the tires. Any suggestions here?

I would find another tire place...just to have everything rebalanced and to check your rims to see if they're really true. The extra stuff the dealer sold you had nothing to do with your shaking either...

At this point, I would:

1) Find another tire shop. Ask for a tire balance for all 4 tires. Should be about $10 a tire.

2) Find another dealer. Ask the service advisor to take a road test with you and drive the car on the highway to experience the shaking.

Also, have them check about the missing clotter pins.

Bring two receipts from the two different tire shops showing that the tires have been properly balanced.

What dealer are you using? I have been reasonably satisified with the competency of 128 Volvo in Wakefield.
