98 S70, N/A Oil Pan/Sump O-rings question... Motor mount replacement?

Post by theWIFES_S70 »

Hey all, I've been reading through the write up for the o-ring replacement. (Getting the ticking on startup, oil pressure light for two seconds, and general (minor) unhappiness at startup) Sounds doable. Just a total PITA when you find metal that's in the way, e.g. power steering lines (mine are rusty and in horrible shape) and that part of the subframe.

Has anyone attempted to drop the pan while at the same time replacing the front, rear, and side motor mounts? I was watching the FCP motor mount replacement video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHFufHp_Qpw) and saw that Ben, towards the end, was able to lift the engine quite a bit using the transmission. If the motor mounts are going to be replaced, and you give yourself all that extra clearance, seems like a good time to tackle the oil pan... I suppose the only problem would be leaving the car suspended by the transmission for days, which could happen if you run into problems... Which is probably not a good thing! Any thoughts?

Before I did the oil pan o-rings, I'd change to a 10 40 weight full synthetic oil and see if that solves the lifter noise. I did the o rings and it did not help the ticking. I'll be going to 10 40 on my next oil change.

I would be tempted to throw some seafoam in the engine as well (follow their directions) along with the synthetic oil. Otherwise, if I were to do this job, I would rent an engine lift- Autozone rents them to you for a few days at a time I believe. I wouldn't use the lift to lift the engine completely out, but to pull it up some and to "assist." We aware that to much of an angle and you'r axles won't like it!

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I just changed the oil and put in the Summer 10-40 Mobil 1 and it sounded noticeably quieter. I'll keep an eye on it. There are some totally rusted bolts around the oil pan, near the oil filter housing. I can't imagine those would come out easily...
