1998 S90 shifter sticks in park.

I have a 1998 S90. The transmission broke. I had a used shifter installed with a new shifter knob. I drove today. When I tried to push the button on the shifter knob, it would not depress after depressing the brake. I had to use the "shift lock" button , remove the shifter knob and utilize the shift lock button to die gage the shifter and put it in drive. Is there a tendency for the shifter to just screw up? I am more than a little discouraged.

I swapped a shifter from a 1994 960 into my 1988 760. Been pushing the shift lock override button for years to get out of park.
