So I have beat the system! I can start my car with a chipless key. A standard $19 dollar key. How you ask... Its impossible you say.. Well you are mostly right and partly wrong. I bought my 2001 v70XC a few months back with only one valet key - so i have been dreading losing that key but dreading buying a backup for 300-400$ more. Also My anntenna Ring that sends the chip mesage to my immobalizer was going bad so i bought a new one (60$). So it got me thinking. Couldnt i just tape my one chipped key to my anntenna ring and then start it with another chipless key? Well the answer is yes. You can. So if you only have one key left. YOu can tape that to your antenna ring, put it up under the dash, then use a 19$ chipless valet key to start it. I used my old atenna ring unplugged so there isnt an unpealling look under the steering wheel casing, but honestly that isnt needed. I will post pics if requested.

Well done on the hack!

There is also info here on MvS about digging the chip out of the key

A new key programmed should only be about 100 USD if you shop around. Find a shop that will multitask there VIDA to help you out
