1999 V70 XC - Repair Update

Post by Onaspring »

I purchased Bertha Blue a three weeks ago, finally got her in the shop for a once over to deal with the following issues:

1. Jumpy/ruff idle upon start, levels out after a couple minutes, then gets jumpy again every time I slow to a stop (lights dim and get brighter, etc)

2. Takes 2 or 3 times to start it

3. Problems with Turbo and acceleration in general.

Codes pulled:

P0121 ECM-9150 - Throttle Unit Potentiometer
P0014 ECM-641A - Camshaft Control, Exhaust
P1638 ECM-715D - Engine Congtrol Module (ECM) high temperature
P0705 - Faulty Park/Neutral Position Switch
P1238 - Turbocharger control valve
P1618 - Engine Light On

The ECM was replaced in the past with a used unit. I've been told that's why the check engine light is on.

My mechanic said that someone zip-tied the wires from the sparkplug/coil area so he's going to redo those wires. The Turboboot is also ripped.

The water pump is leaking, and when I looked up symptoms of timing belt/water pump failure, they were EXACTLY the symptoms I'm having:

"The engine runs ruff at idle, has decreased gas mileage, less power and smells from the exhaust. I understand that this is probably resulting from misfiring for some reason"

I received an oil change and was told there is an oil leak. They powerwashed the underside and put dye in the oil so they can see later this week where the leak is coming from. Crossing my fingers it isn't a big deal.

Repairs to be completed shortly:

1. Total cost for rebuilding the coil wiring and replacing the boot: 287.00 (includes labor)
2. Total cost for replacing the water pump/belt/tensioner: 565.00 (208 for the kit from IPD, the rest in Labor) I was originally quoted about 400 bucks for the kit, hahaha NOPE. Thanks IPD!

Plus a radiator flush (they may as well while they're at it) and the total for fixing up Bertha Blue should be right around 1,000.

I'm hoping this is all I'll need for a few months. I thought I bought a lemon, I don't think that anymore. She was/is a BEAST in the snow (and we just got 18 inches in Detroit). I'm in love and already dreaming of a 2009-12 XC model. SO nice!

Haha, made it to work this morning, turned the car off and bam, I hear a loud noise, look under my car and poof, all the oil that was once in my engine is now on the ground.

I did get a lemon after all. Ah well. The AWD was fun in the snow yesterday, good to know.

She goes to the junkyard tomorrow. Bummer.

No idea. But it definitely did. I heard a loud, blunted sound under the hood, smoke started pouring out of the hood, and underneath my car is all the freshly changed oil. I don't even care. I got a lemon, I didn't check the car well enough before I bought it, lesson learned.

Are you sure that is oil and not lemon juice...
Example of Precision: Measure with a Micrometer, mark it with Chalk, and then cut it with an Axe.
