Is there a "Volvo wave"?

Post by ashly.ydr »

So, I've been pondering this thought for, like, 3 months now and I figured you all would be the best people to answer this question. Well, actually, you're the ONLY people that can answer this question, because I don't know anyone else that would even think of owning a Volvo (kinda sad, right?).

From Volvo to Volvo, do we wave at each other? I mean, are we even supposed to acknowledge each other, or am I the only one who does that? I've waved at several different Volvos at different times and feel like a literal idiot. I wave mostly because I've thought of Volvos as like a novelty, since I don't see many, and I supposed that other Volvo owners thought the same. I thought we could have a "connection". Or maybe no one likes a lame, old S80 with Plastidip'd wheels (I know, I've heard it a million times..."you ruined that car!"). It's probably more likely that the others are just coincidentally driving a Volvo because it's just something to drive. Maybe they just have no idea. Or maybe my car is actually as lame as everyone says (though I still don't believe it  ). Or maybe, just maybe...we don't wave.

Thoughts?

Volvo is not a novelty firstly, it a company that has aimed primarily to the higher middle class mothers, doctors, etc.for at least 30 years now. The price of the Volvo from my childhood a 1970 2 door and it did have air, among other options , my father could have bought several Fords or Chevrolet cars for the price of that little Volvo. Where I live Volvo, Porsche, Mercedes, are common to see. I have owned Volvos for a good deal of my 30 years of driving and don't know of a Volvo wave. My dealer just today admired my 2004 S80 T6 and I had to disappoint them as I will never let my S80 go. I do attend on purchasing a new S90 but no dice on trading Baby in. So if people around you think your car is lame, they likely think a Honda or something like that is the car to have. If yours is a T6 than just laugh at them in your rear view mirror! I have nothing against all other car makes but the day may come that you will be thankful for your Volvo saving your life or wife and children. My 1998 S90 and 2002 S80 T6 both saved mine. That is the real appeal of Volvo if you ask me. The T6 and roomy interior and trunk and rely ability are all bonuses in my opinion. So enjoy your S80 and feel proud you own a car that states you don't follow the crowd, but lead! June

There are only two of us in the county I live in, and I have assisted him, so yes, its natural to wave. In smaller rural counties, just about everybody you know waves at you, btw. In bigger cities, you see a lot more birds.

He has three Volvos (244, 744, & 745), and I have three Volvos (244, 245, & 944).

I think part of it is like most cars you have such a wide variety of owners. If it was a niche car like an older muscle car (corvette, mustang) those owners are pretty tight (and also the Harley riders for that matter) they do nods and waves. From personal experience I have gotten a couple waves and nods but they've been from older model Volvo owners. Don't feel awkward, keep waving. Make a Volvo wave up yourself. It might catch on. You never know.

I think we should create a unique gesture. I don't think any other car brand is using or has used sticking one's tongue out when meeting someone in the same make of car. I will start sticking my tongue out when meeting other Volvos. If someone driving a Volvo V70R, XC60, new XC90, or an S90 meets you with his tongue out, it's me. Stick your tongue out as a response gesture.

That might catch on. If Volvo corp. Marketing starts using that in any ads anywhere, ask for royalties. I'm your witness to starting the new trend...haha

Hahaha, thanks everybody! It's true, there is a huge variety of owners. Unfortunately, I think a lot of Volvo owners here are just plain WEIRD. Like, really weird.
My boyfriend has an Impreza RS (non modded), and constantly gets waved at by other Subies. I wave at other Volvos... nothing. I even drove my dad's F150 before (just 'cause I had to) and a fellow F150 waved at me. I hate it. :P

I give thumbs up when I see an oldie Volvo. In my area, they're not that common, go to the capital city or "Lakes Region" it's like VW bugs at a hippie convention. :)

I agree there are a number of "strange rangers" on the forum but no more than any other car brand forum. Like you mentioned there is a lot of comradery between owners of other makes, I see it myself quite often. Ultimately not everyone is an enthusiast like you, myself and many members on this forum are. We're far from each other but the forum brings us all together at least. If I were you, I'd look for events or people near you who are into Volvo or even Saab people because they're pretty cool in their own way too.

I will chime in again and say I tried to start a 'wave' locally. The letter V with index and middle finger spread wide... then remembered if they're from the UK they might take offense. ;) We get a lot of UK people moving to NH quite often. LOL
