I took my car to NTB tonight to get an alignment since I did the tie rods the other day. Since I bought my tires there they did a free 4 wheel balance while they were at it. They found two bent rims and stuck them in the back for me. So now I know that my suspicion of bent rims was correct.
I have found some really clean used rims for sale but I'm concerned about how the owner packages them for shipping. The owner plans to put all 4 wheels in one box (cardboard I'm guessing) with a piece of cardboard between each wheel to keep them from banging together. I feel that this is completely inadequate but maybe I'm being too picky.
How are aluminum wheels usually packaged for shipping?

Tire rack puts a round piece of cardboard on both side of the wheel and shipping straps around the tire. They do two together, last time I bought at least. 4 in a box with no tires sounds okay but a little sketchy. They won't hit potholes at speed so won't bend but may scuff.

I was driving to a stone warehouse the other day (Charlotte NC) and noticed a truck working on a car at the persons office. He was pulling off the wheels and his business was wheel straighting. Don't know cost, but he came to the person and that struck me as pretty cool. Maybe worth looking into.
Are all wheels bad or 1or2 need fixed?

Your love for you Volvo sounds a lot like mine. After my '98 died I picked up a '99 and drive it at least 100 miles a day. Change the oil and now it needs tires and timing belt this weekend. I do like to work on cars a little, when the air is a good temp, but lately not so much. Mine is a work car/ to and from/ that's it.
The '06 V70 is the nice car in the fleet. Just last week having the grandson in the back seat, his comment was that he loved the smell of the '06. To him it smelled new. I don't let him ride in mine.
The '06 is WELL maintained and the '99 is maintained.
I kept the 16" rims from my '98 and ran the 15" on the '99 till the tires ran smooth, now I am about finished with the 16". I'll price the cost of both sizes and go cheap.
Good luck on your quest for round.

They told me at NTB that two wheels were pretty bad and the other two (now on the front) are not too bad. That said, it still vibrates in the 65-75 mph range. I didn't used to get steering wheel shaking but now after putting the best ones on the front I do, although its pretty subtle. The vibration may slightly better - hard to tell - but its definitely different. This leads me to believe that my wheels are the primary suspects. I would like to rule out the CV drive axles but I'm not sure that's possible. I get the shaking above 65 mph whether I'm coasting or in neutral, accelerating or decelerating or at constant speed. It seems to be a little worse if accelerating but its hard to tell.obayha wrote:I was driving to a stone warehouse the other day (Charlotte NC) and noticed a truck working on a car at the persons office. I need new tires so I'm trying to deal with this at the same time so I don't have to pay twice for mounting and balancing. One of my front tires is new so I know that its OK. The other one seems OK to me . I've looked it over and it doesn't have any obvious belt separation or uneven wear or cupping or anything out of the ordinary.

How old are your axles? A little worse on acceleration can be a sign of axles.
What wheels do you have? 15 or 16"?
Where in SE are you located?

Well... I said maybe a little worse on acceleration - hard to tell. What I mean is I'm not really sure. When you're accelerating (if you're doing it correctly according to Newton's Laws - you're going faster - so its hard to tell. The nature of the vibration doesn't change when I take my foot off the gas ... it just fades down because the car slows down about 5 mph pretty quickly.
I have the very common Cetus 15 inch wheels. I am in Atlanta - home of the American Autobahn (285 and 400).
That's why this matters to me. I can't drive the speed limit without being the slowest car on the road. I moved here from Chicago about 30 years ago. In Chicago if you speed you WILL get a ticket. In Atlanta you have to be driving about 15 mph above the speed limit just to keep up. I have never seen anyone get a speeding ticket here unless they were traveling about 95 -100 mph - ever. Others may not agree - just my opinion.

see post my earlier post just above this one. Forgot to say the axle on the drivers side is 2 weeks old. The one on the passengers side is about 6 years old. Drivers side is rebuilt volvo. Passenger side is unknown manufacturer aftermarket put on by brake shop. Quality of the aftermarket part has been very good. No previous problems with it.

Having your thread declared solved when it isn't limits future comments to about none. In the past if you posted a remotely related thread it would be declared redundant. Most people including me want to follow the rules. Once the moderator declares a thread solved does that free me up to post something related without repercussions and negative comments from the moderator? It seems to me that the only person who knows if a thread is solved or not is the person who posted it.
