Strange growl under low/medium acceleration

Post by stewartwarner »

2008 XC90 3.2L 2WD with 116,000 miles. I have noticed under low or medium acceleration that there is an odd growl noise or secondary engine noise. The vehicle does have some vibration in the steering but I attribute that to needing new tires. Under cruising road and hwy speed the growl seems to disappear. Doesn't seem to be missing and engine runs very smooth. Also seems to have very good power and acceleration. Shifting is very smooth. No engine codes displayed.

Any ideas?

I think I may have found the culpret. I was inspecting the upper torque mount to see if I could tell if the bushings were worn and noticed there is significant side to side movement of the front larger end of the torque rod mount that connects to the engine. I could move it side to side by hand, which would produce a screeching noise on the bolt. The noise I'm while driving hearing isn't a screech. I assume the vibration on the bolt upon acceleration could cause the noise I hear?

I was unable to tell visually the condition of the front bushing since it's underneath the metal shrowd that is connected to the engine. The rear bushing towards the firewall seemed solid and didn't have any movement.

Sounds like your belt tensioner is wearing out. Have you had the drive belt and components replaced or have you inspected them?
