Thanks for reposting the link to your repair. That's the the first time I've seen it and I feel smarter already:)

Thanks to all for this post ......I had no idea what to do when my Volvo 850 T started and then immediately stopped (engine cuts out). Anyway, I went through the advice here (checking the fuel relay and overriding it with a paper clip) and it started perfectly, and I drove it around a few blocks and all is good......
My question is, will it be ok to drive it around for a day or two (while I'm waiting to get a new relay) with the paper clip in there....just three miles to work, back home, a few other short trips...?
Thanks for the advice!
Alan.

That's fine Alan. The paper clip might get hot so be careful removing it when done.
If you really want to be safe you can build a jumper wire with a fuse but if you just pay attention it to it the paper clip is fine.
This seems to have been cured on 1999+ models, there are a lot fewer fuel pump relay failures in the anecdata here, at least.

Well.....I think I jumped the gun here. (Volvo 850, 1995, Turbo wagon, about 150,000 m)
I got the new fuel relay and I now realize there is something more wrong. The car starts, sounds good for about 15-20 seconds, then dies. If I try again it starts for about 5 - 10 sec then dies..... If I wait 10 mins or so , it starts for about 20 secs again...
I got out and could hear a high pitch sort of "whine" from the rear of the car (fuel pump?)...other than that I have no idea what the problem is?
I did try releasing the fuel cap, to see if there was any kind of vacuum causing the problem, but that didn't fix it.
Any suggestions really appreciated!
Thank you!
Alan.

Time to check for fuel pressure at the rail to see if your pump is putting out. An inspection of the coil cap rotor and plugs is also in order. When were they last replaced?

Pick and pull should net you one for $10 or less. Grab a fist full and have spares.

Thanks For the replies and info, much appreciated!abscate wrote:Time to check for fuel pressure at the rail to see if your pump is putting out. An inspection of the coil cap rotor and plugs is also in order. When were they last replaced?
I checked the fuel pressure (using a tire gauge) and this is what I found:
Engine off (off all night): pressure nothing
Engine on (it starts for about 20 -30 secs) jumped out and took pressure: 35-40 on gauge, a a bit of fuel sprayed out as I did this
Engine off again immediately after: pressure nothing
Does this sound like bad pump? or possible dirty fuel filter?
I replaced the plugs, wires, cap rotor about 9 mo's ago so they should be good?
