2001 S60 2.4t Many problems

Post by Ryans60 »

The problems all started about a week after I bought this car. I've been reading on these forums since then about 10 months ago. All was perfect the first week and I was absolutely loving the car. And then all of a sudden I'm sitting at a light to get on to the freeway, and the car tries to lurch forward with the brake still fully engaged and the check engine light came on and the transmission service required message came up. Ever since then the transmission has had hard shifting, jerking while driving and shifting through gears, and that awful stop-neutral function. I replaced the lower torque mount, and ran new oil and ran new mission fluid through it. Not a flush but just a refill. What came out was pretty dark but I could still tell it was a little red. About 2 weeks ago on my way home the car shifted from second to third and s*** really hit the fan. It felt like it was trying to into first then it jerked back and forth mid driving for about 3 seconds then went into third and then the low coolant light came on with stop engine asap. I replaced the radiator and both the upper and lower hose yet it still leaks. It drops off the bottom driver side of the car. But that's all, and even a 1 minute drive and there will be no coolant in the tank and it will bring the stop engine asap code again. There is no white smoke coming from the car. Any suggestions?

There are hoses and heater hoses on that side near the turbo that sound like they need attention.

Before you spend another dollar on the car, though, read the 2001 transmission sticky and decide if you are going to move forward. That Stop Neutral software should be removed but at this point we might be polishing the brass on the Titanic

I have read through it unfortunately. I have my mind set on getting rid of this car but I need it for the mean time as its my only car. I hadn't known about the transmission problems in these cars until after I bought the car :(
I do plan on switching over to a manual. Thank you for your suggestion, I will look over it today

Probably needs a software update.... Quick test is whilst in P (park) rev the engine to Max if it has had software update it will only rev to 4000rpm if it revs to red line it defo needs to be updated. The software update changes transmission control module settings. I had similar problems mine is like new gearbox now

Swapping in a good used 2001 transmission is a lot cheaper/faster/easier than a manual conversion. Not as sexy though. I can't drive around town wiihout my wife in my T5M or else college girls throw themselves on my hood...

Once you get rid of that horrible neutral stop software, I think the 2001s are ok
