2000 S70 Really likes limp home mode

Post by deardeergod »

I had a reoccurring problem last year with my vehicle and one of the symptoms was it would go into limp home mode. The problem was very odd and was eventually fixed by replacing the battery. I had been good for months.

The other day I was going down the highway when it went into limp home mode again. I was concerned that the same problem had reappeared but this time it was a bit different. My speedometer went to zero which was part of the fault in the past. Different lights were coming on on the dash including my SRS which was a bit alarming. I noticed the radio going in and out so I turned it off and turned off my headlights. The speedometer came back on and since I was close to my destination I went the rest of the way there. I tried to use my OBD II reader but it would not connect to the car. I shut it off and a few minutes later when I went to restart all I heard was a click. I figured it was the alternator and sure enough it was. I got a new one in and the car is right as rain again.

Should I be concerned about my car going into limp home mode so much? Is there something else going on in the electrics that I should be concerned about? Any and all input would be appreciated.

Sounds like you may have just unfortunately reached the 'sweet spot' for electrical issues. The battery issue may actually have been the alternator starting to go and no it has been replaced, chances are all is good to go. These cars need (I think I remember correctly) 9.6V minimum to run the systems. If you drop below that then weird stuff happens. If your battery and alternator are no both checking out goo, I believe you will now be ok.
