Can I use a 850 t5 head that has had .030 shaved off?

Post by Uncle_Olaf »

Like the title says, long story short machine shop called a while back saying my head was pretty warped and he believed he would have to shave .020 to make it flat. Perhaps foolishly I told him to go ahead. He recently called back and said he shaved .025-.030. Bottom line, can this be used still? What are the concerns with this drastic of a shave?

Maximum height reduction after machining is listed at 0.0118 inches on my Haynes Repair Manual.

The block is also aluminum, if you have to remove that much to get the head straight, I'd replace the block as well.

I've checked the block with a straight edge and feeler gauges as far as I can tell the block is fine. But I suppose I should go for a new head?

I don't know about the Volvos, but on other motors you'd have to reset the cam timing because they will be running more retarded than design parameters dictate. Also be mindful of the ignition timing because of the slight increase in compression. If you decide to try it, start off with premium gas.

Update: in the market for a rebuilt head. I don't want to risk running that sketchy of a head and having to do the whole job over in the near future. Especially since I plan on running a bigger turbo and more boost, I really don't want a higher compression ratio.
