What Brand of Premium Fuel Do You Use?

Post by SleeStak69 »

So this is my first turbocharged car and I've always thought that I would need to start going to the big name brands like Shell, Chevron, and 76. And that's what I've been doing. Am I wasting money? What do you guys use? SPEAK TO ME VOLVO ENTHUSIASTS AND GURUS OF THE UNIVERSE!

Download your user manual and follow

1 minimum octane requirement if you drive like a normal person

2 recommended octane if you love to boost.

Be aware of the difference between EU and US octane numbers, too.

Brand of gas doesn't matter too much. You retailer might not even buy the brand on the sign.

I use Shell's 98 RON. Which would be 93 AKI (which you use in the US), I think? And I love to boost, so I take that into account. ;)

Premium fuel is a mis-leading term. So is "Premium fuel" runs cleaner. I'm not sure why there isn't a class auction law-suit against those description yet.

You pay more money for higher octane, which is more resistance to per-ignition aka knock.

Keep in mind your car does NOT have direction injection and it is design to run on higher octane gas, until knock is detected then the ECU will retard timing to save the engine from knocking.

I don't think it's really misleading. Anything in America that is 91 and above is Premium. I haven't watched the second video you linked but I don't find it important, when the owners manual states "91 octane ONLY" or "Pemium fuel ONLY" I think I'm going to do just that. If your owners manual states 87 octane like my Subaru did, then using Premium won't help. It's a fuel specifically for only specific cars. My question was the brand of fuel, meaning like, do I need Shell or Chevron gas that uses fuel additives or could I get by with say a straightforward fredmeyer gas that doesn't have additives. I want to use the one most beneficial

I use the highest octane available at whatever station I happen to stop at. If you prefer your exhaust valves not to burn I suggest using the recommended octane not the minimum.

I don't fully understand what the issue is with calling 91+ octane fuel premium. Is it that the name is misleading to the uninformed?

Nice post, that basically confirms what I would already believe to be true...cheap gas doesn't pay off in the long run.

Shell 93 for me, always. My university collaborates with the company who makes a lot of Shell's fuel additives and that stuff really does make a difference, as shown above! I don't mind paying a bit extra. It might help though that my other vehicle is a Silverado with a 37 gallon tank....
