Brake problem on 98 S70! Help Please!

Post by Venturedan »

I recently purchased a 1998 S70. Has just over 150K and has been well cared for. Earlier today and on 2 previous ocassions, when I hit the brakes, it sounds like 2 sets of gears grinding together and I can even feel it in the brake pedal itself. If I take my foot of the pedal and push again and they work normally. It obviously concerns me since my wife will be driving this car and she may panic as it won't stop unless you let off and reapply the brakes. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Dan Matheson

When you say "2 sets of gears grinding together" is it a grinding sound or is it a pulsation?

The grinding sound made me knee jerk to pads that were done and you were hitting metal on metal on the brakes but your next statement that "If I take my foot of the pedal and push again and they work normally." makes me think an ABS issue.

Is your ABS and/or Tracs light on?

Do those lights come on when you first turn the key to position I before you start the car?

Lee, thank you for the response. The sound I hear is not a metal on metal sound. It sounds like to gears that aren't fully meshing together. The pads are around 80% and the rotars look good too. The ABS light does not light up at all. There is a "brake" light in the instrument cluster that lights up when the ignition is turned on. I took the car to a local Volvo mechanic to check for fault codes. The only thing he found was a "rich bank 1" code. Let me know what your thoughts are.

Thanks again for your response!

Dan :)

Lee's on the right track. It sounds like you have an ABS issue. The fact that the ABS light doesn't come on when you turn the key to the on position says to me the bulb is either burned out or someone took the bulb out to cover up the issue. The pulsating and grinding like noise you are hearing is the normal operation of the ABS unit. It was designed that way but it shouldn't be engaging when you're just driving along.

But no matter. It's an easy fix, just remove the ABS control module and see if the symptom goes away. With the module removed your speedometer and odometer will not work. If the symptom goes away, send it off to Victor and he'll rebuild it for you. Here's the link.

If your problem is recurring and won't be fixed, you should think about seeking legal help. The site I use when I have problems with my volvo is http://www.volvoproblems.com. They helped me a lot.
