turbo failure

Post by swaneez2 »

my '99 XC (220K) has been running well for a couple years so have not been on the forum lately. Now my turbo has gone belly up, with all the associated screeching and whining (not me, the turbo) and I will get a rebuilt and install myself (then the screeching and whining will be me). Besides the turbo, any advice out there for other things in the turbo side of the engine that I should prepare to check and replace at the same time?? There is oil saturation in the area. any suggestions about sources of turbo rebuilders out there? I've found them ranging between $300 and $600. Thanks for any help

They aren't that tough to rebuild on your own but they do take some huge snap ring pliers to do it. If it has gotten to the point where it is making bad noises then it may not be rebuildable without a new impeller. Snagging one off of a pick-n-pull car and rebuilding that one might be cheaper than rebuilding the one you have if it is torn up. The rebuild kit is just a fuzz under $100.00 for the genuine Mitsubishi kit.

At the top of the other stuff to replace while you are there list is the coolant hose and of course the oil return line gasket and O ring. You should also replace all of the copper crush washers on the banjo bolts.

Turbo doesn't just die. Something else caused it to fail, lack of quality oil lubrication, torn CBV, and partially clogged exhaust/catalytic converter is common.

Find out why the turbo died first before replacing it, otherwise you have a high probability the replacement will die very quickly.

If you want to pay for a rebuild, G-Pop shop is highly respected for the quality of their work but not cheap, I think about $400. Be careful, they will not quote you the shipping cost but will bill you for it, I think it is like $35, be sure to find that out if you want to price them out.

Thank you gentlemen, exactly what is helpful. I do plan to drop the pan and check the pickup, as well as the return line, with all new gaskets. What is the CBV? I suspect something oil-flow related doomed the turbo, and there is impeller contact by the sound of it. I did have the cam seals blow out not long ago and likely had notable low oil level a time or two, which may have contributed. thanks again

CBV is the compressor bypass valve. It's what allows your turbo to survive lifting your foot off the throttle. Other designs might use a blow-off valve for this, but an internal CBV is quieter. It's a spring-loaded diaphragm between the inlet and outlet sides of the compressor wheel, that tends to dry out and crack. There are a few piston-based aftermarket replacements out there, too.

This is CBV, you'll find it after you unbolt the 3 bolts on your turbo's compressor housing.

As far as the rebuild kits go, will those just fix bad seals? Can shaft movement be corrected or does that require a new turbo?

The full rebuild kit comes with new bearings, seals, backer plate and new snap rings. It is pretty much a new turbo when it was done. It will fix excessive play.

If the bearings got loose enough that the impeller started scraping then it is pretty much done though.
