good day i drive a XC90 2007 V8 volvo and my alternator went bust sometime ago and recently purchased a new from a Volvo dealer in South AFrica and in the process of my mechanic replacing it , however he noticed a slight diference on the back black cover from the old to the new one as shown .
his main worry is that maybe the white cap is not heat resistant and is easily removable.
my question is should he install alternator as it is or remove cap and then install it .will there not be a problem if installed without cap like dust and pebbles if the car goes off road which i ocassionally do ?
please help

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that cap is just to keep crap out of it during shipping.
Alternators generate a lot of heat, and need to breathe to keep cool. That cap is covering the only open spot on that end. Looks like trouble to me.
