No clear coat also means that the color will change radically depending on how the paint has been maintained. If it has not been cleaned well and polished in many years, it will look much lighter and faded. With a good polish (chemical or abrasive, depending on need) it will bring back the reflective qualities of the paint which will change the color.

And once cleaned up, keep it waxed.

Are you sure the clearcoat was only with metallic paint? My 96 850 wagon had plain black paint, and was definitely clearcoated (only mostly, by the time I got it).

Yeah, all my P80 cars have had clearcoat, including my T5-R (black). Mostly black but also a blue and a gray. Maybe misha is referring to something about the formulation rather than "metallic flake" etc.

I was talking about that acrylic paints have clearcoat(lacque) in the mix with paint, hardener, thinner and after that is all mixed up well, then the car is being painted.Clearcoat is NOT added afterwards. It could be but it's not recommended because of high rate of a peeling possibility.

Metallic paint have clearcoat(lacque) separately. They are not mixing in the process.First...there are a few coats of metallic paint and when it's dry, then clearcoat is added...in separate procedure...to add shine.

This is why metallic paints are more prone to clercoat peeling.
Acrylic paint usually don't peel but it's more prone to fading.

Both type of paints are easily restored with water sanding paper, polishing and waxing...if the paint or clearcoat are not damaged.

I repainted mine with Single Stage PPG Deltron paint, which doesn't normally have a clear coat. The single stage paint has the shine built in it. There are various paints recommended by Volvo depending on the original color. The Yellow ones are single stage, without clear coat.

Single stage paint is what is used on aircraft. The paint experiences great temperature ranges, and lasts a long time. It is very durable, and looks great for a long time.

When I wanted to check whether my car was actually a yellow one, I went to a dealership with the VIN number, and asked for the paint code originally applied. The person showed me that the car was in fact a true yellow one. I'd recommend checking with a dealer, using the VIN number. They have all sorts of information, such as the radio code, etc....

As far as the color, it really depends on the monitors, and the conditions when photographed, as well as the type of medium used. The pictures you posted are of one of the cars in the Volvo museum.

Good luck.

The original paint code is right there on the product plate next to the VIN, you can tell the original color right away for any Volvo.

If and only if the plate says 607 then your T5-R came from the factory with Cream Yellow paint. There is no Volvo paint color named Gull Yellow.

I forgot about that, good catch erikv11.

I bought mine sight unseen from out of town, so I didn't have the opportunity to see the plate.

Good luck.

They were only distributed in England. I saw one in London a few years ago. Another odd color.

I have seen one in the USA. I believe at least 10 were special ordered to the US, wagons.
