Timing Belt - 2006 S60 T5 stopped running while driving

Post by blackmoreb »

2006 S60 T5 stopped running while driving. Car just went dead. Towed it to a shop who said broken timing belt and wanted $2500 to repair. Parked it and bought wife a new Volvo. So now I'm in the process of pulling the head to see how much damage to valves and pistons. Pulled timing belt cover... and the timing belt is NOT broken. It looks damaged... but still solid. So why did the engine stop?

It likely skipped some cogs.

If you get it dismantled far enough, it's easy to check the timing and see if that's what happened.

Maybe the tensioner died and it skipped a few teeth on one or both of the cam pulleys. Let us know what you find when you pull the head.

Replacing or rebuilding the head should be easy enough (http://www.ebay.com/itm/VOLVO-2-4-2-5-D ... 0887573476).

But note the procedure for resetting the VVT cams is a bit of a chore.
