Is that MP3 adapter a dealer-only option (i.e. did you order it from a dealer), or is it something that you can get anywhere? I have an SC-901, and it's got a bunch of plugs in the back that are already taken up, except for a 4-pin green male connector (no idea what it's for).

I was surprised to see there was a plug in the back for "CD" (with a cable connected to it), despite the fact that I don't have a 6-CD changer - only the in-dash three-cd changer.

Where does the IPOD/MP3 player adapter connect in to the H/U?

Unfortunately the sc901 does not support this aux adaptor at present. I was told by my supplier that it was. However upon trying it i found that the H/U does not recognise that anything is connected to the 6disc port.

I have been told that they are looking into changing the software on the adaptor so that it will work.

The 6disc connector has a plug in it as the cars are pre-wired ready for the changer. The other end is located in the boot on the convertible where the pocket is in the side panel.

I will keep people informed once the updated kit is available. I will be able to supply these kits directly.

Hm, I had been thinking (erroneously, I guess) that if I had been able to source a cable that was 8 pin Mini-DIN male on one end, and RCA L/R female on the other, that I could have simply connected an MP3 player to it (via a 3.5 mm headphone jack-to-L/R male RCA cable).

But it sounds like there is more to it than simply cabling?

As I put on my cynic's hat, I realize that there is probably a reason that Volvo used an 8-pin DIN plug in the first place, instead of just making it a straight AUX connection. There must be other pins used for some sort of bus/data connection, such that the head unit can communicate with only known, proprietary auxiliary units (like the volvo branded 6cd changer...)

sigh.

PS. Looking forward to hearing more about this when you get it figured out...

You can also connect an Alpine 6disc changer to the 901 as it is basically an Alpine based H/U. You do require a Vol-Alp adaptor tho. Still cheaper than OE changer.

Yes - the CD changer needs to be of a particular type and able to "handshake" using a particular standard with the head unit before the head unit will route any audio signals to the amp. Adapters trick the head unit into believing a CD unit is responding, and then passing through the audio signal.

So tapping into the CD input on the back of the head unit will not work in any simple configuration.

I'm usually a V.S. goer, but saw this subject and thought I'd reply...

I programmed and sell the changer interface chips and a full aux-in kit for those that don't want to take apart the radio - for much cheaper than other alternatives. A kit without the changer cable (you supply) is only $20.

Also I have aux-in devices that send serial commands to a carputer from the head unt for ffwd/rew, disc, etc. Also dual aux-in devices and changer/aux passthroughs that are switched from the head unit.

Send me a PM or visit my site if you'd like more info

Just to add to the information:

I took apart my SC-816 today to do the hookup. it is not possible on this headunit as far as i can tell. The cassette module only connects with a ribbon cable to the main board. There are no separate audio connections. Bummer. :(

erie2theworld,

You should be able to do it with a ribbon cable, too. Are there no connections at all to the cassette unit besides the ribbon? Can you post a photo?

You can just plug in an aux input kit into the 6disc changer port on ALL SC h/u (Except 900 series  )

As yet I have not seen an aux input kit for the 9** SC h/u. I have just changed mine to this..
