Manual driver side window crank does not bring the window all the way up, and it freezes when the window is about 8" from the top.
The window is also loose when compared to the one on the passanger side. I'm able to lift the loose window by hand and use the crank to bring it all the way to the top. It stays there without falling down. Any help in solving the
problem would be appreciated.

Welcome to Matthew's Volvo Site.
There's not a lot can go wrong with the manual window system. The winder moves an arm, inside the door, which is fitted into a lift channel at the bottom of the glass. Sometimes the lift channel can move which then affects the distance the window will travel.
You need to remove the door trim panel and have a look inside. The channel can be re-positioned if it has moved. You may need to remove the panel from the other front door to see exactly where it should be.
Bill.

Yes Bill is right on this.
I think your window has come apart from your regulator. Not hard to fix once you remove your interior door trim.
Also has someone taken the door trim off already? sometimes the the mechanism itself gets stuck with the wire harness if its not reassembled properly.

Hi Bill,
The CARVOLVO individual who also responded to the problem
of "stuck winder", mentions a window regulator. Is it possible
that the pin on the regulator has broken off, and if so would I
need to replace the regulator, or can it be fixed. I have taken
the inside panel off, but the window mechanism is hidden
between the center and the outer door panel, and it is very hard
to see inside. By the way many thanks to you and the gentleman
from Canada for the helpful suggestions.

What you need to do is wind the mechanism lower.. if your glass is loose have someone hold it while you move it to a lower area to inspect it.
The bottom half of the door actually has some tar paper of plastic which can be removed and give you a larger inspection port.
Yes very possible that the "half a paperclip" holders for the glass have popped off and either are rusty or fallen into the door cavity.

To All those that might have similar window cranking problem
All 1981 Volvos have four (4) bolts securing the window cranking mechanism to the center metal panel. I found out from the Volvo people that the bolts on some lots of these wagons came without pressure washers and over period of time due to car vibration became loose and fell off. This happened to me. Of the four bolts, three (3) came off and fell to the bottom of the door with only one partially holding the whole mechanism assembly. I used stainless washers with stainless pressure washers to reinstall the bolts and the window cranking mechanism works now great. Additionally, I replaced the paper insulator with heavy duty sheet of polyvinyl. Total cost of repair $5.99 for "Inside Door Panel Removal Tool".
