02 v70 trans works then quits

My friend took a shot at this Volvo for 500 bucks with trans trouble.Past owner said he come home from work great and tryed to go up his driveway and it wouldn't pull the hill.So he claimed his local trans shop said it was time for a rebuild with 142,000 on the od.So he decided to sell.This is my first Volvo experience and looking for ideas because this makes no sense.I can start the car pull it in drive and the car do great climb hills whatever for a minute or so then I'll stop and try to put it in reverse and it just sits there.So I'll shut the car off and start it back and I have reverse just like it should and other gears but after a minute or so it starts the normal 2nd to 3rd slack shifts and nearly like it's in neutral.But once again I put it in park turn the car off start it back and all my gears are there again.Fluid looks very good,the gear selector in the dash shows that it's in the correct gear,but it does have the trans service urgent light on after it starts acting up.Any ideas from anyone are greatly appreciated on things I should try or advice?

Start by clearing the codes, driving, and reading the new codes.

These aren't cheap cars to fix, and if you don't wrench on them yourself they will break the bank.

Many, many a poor soul has fallen in love with a great looking 15 year old Volvo and ended up with 10,000 in needed repairs on the clock.

Seems like there is an electrical module that quits. As above, try pulling new codes.

I got a po733,po735,po740,po1618,po014,after clearing the codes with a cheap actron scanner it still acted up same as before and and I've got codes again with the dread triangle and trans urgent flashing.Plan to scan it again to see if there the same as mentioned earlier.These codes all being trans related except the timing one any thoughts of next step?Thanks for the help so far and in advance.

Pull the trans and drop in another one. It will take a couple of weekends and a good tool set.

Short of changing fluid there is little you can do.
