I have my old beige leather steering wheel that I had intended to re-dye, but clearly it didn't go as I had planned. The leather is still in very good shape, and it can be re-dyed using proper dyes. The leather is NOT worn through anywhere, and it is still nice and smooth.
I'll sell it to forum members for $50 shipped through Paypal. Just trying to clear out some space for more spare Volvo parts!
