2001 V 40 with 115K , 1.9T, auto trans flushed 4k ago with proper fluid.
Under hard accel (like onto onramp or passing at 40mph+) the car jerks pretty violently and sometimes the SES light will flash. If I accel smoothly at less than 3/4 throttle, it does not do it. It will not store the code.
Now I have read this ETM stuff and some things I read say the 40series is not included (specifically the recall/warranty notice from Volvo).
I think this is fuel issue be it MAF, TPS, fuel pres reg, or injectors but this ETM thing would make sense.
ANYONE?

Wanna rent a sportbike or track bike in Phoenix- PM me!
I have a 2001 S40 1.9T 140K, basically the same car and have the same problem. My traction control (DSA) light flashes mostly at high speeds.
I can't say I have fixed the problem, however I did need to replace my MAF, finally got an error code for this, try clean first though with MAF spray.
Also I discovered today one of my spark plug coils is cracked may also be creating a miss fire every so often, its a long shot.
Might be a transmission thing?? My transmission got stuck in 1st a while back, but not since, but timing seems to be slightly off.
Oh and its probably not an ABS thing, I removed mine and the problem persisted.
What ever it is its common on S40, I've seen other people complaining on other forums.

Well- I figured out my trouble. I had to do some serious driving for my job and after checking service records at dealer (one owner couple prior to me with all dealer service!) found that it never had the plugs changed and now with 119k on it, maybe that was my issue. I searched and found that Bosch platinums were good to use and popped them in. No change and it felt maybe a bit worse. Popped in the old ones, changed the fuel filter and took off. About 100 miles into the trip it got waayyy worse, but being in Yuma, AZ with no dealer, had to wait it out a few days unitl I hit Bakersfield.
Got it to Bakersfield and hit up Independent Volvo ( contact me for there info) and they foudn the coils to be bad and arcing to the head (original items). They chraged me a sweet price for the parts so I let them install them so they could still make some money. These guys rocked by the way. Day after 4 July, with no appointment, they took me in since I needed to roll out the next day. And they played Queens of the Stone Age the whole time (private indulgence). I paid and and told the owner I was gonna hammer the thing to see if it was fixed and he said it was good- and was it ever!! No surge or hesitation at all- I need to put the new plugs in now.
Right before I left town, I had to drive mom-in-law to Burbank Airport and it got really hot over the Grapevine (3500' climb in about 6 miles at 110 deg F) and I had to still get back to Bakersfield. I went the other way into Palmdale and crossed west to the I-5 using the HWY 2 which is a gradual climb to 4100' over about 35 miles and twisty two lane the whole way! Get it to the house and find a bit of coolant weeping from the upper hose plastic elbow. Dealer part in that town, but it is updated. Now I am back in Phoenix and everything is good.
