My 2-005 XC90 2.5T with 103K miles has had code P0101 for a few weeks.
Car runs fine no hiccup.
Installed a brand-new Bosch MAF, exact same thing as in the car.
No change.
Then I read somewhere the Turbo Hose can seep enough oil and leak enough air to create this MAF error code.
Ordered a Gates Hose from ebay.
Turned out the Factory Volvo Hose was probably made by Gates b/c the clamps are made by "Norma" brand.
So if you buy Gates hose ($35), you probably get OEM hose (which is $60 at dealer for this stupid hose).
1- Used 7-mm socket (better than flat screwdriver).
2- Mark the old hose with Sharpie so you know which end goes where.
3- Once the old hose is out, compare it with the new hose, you will know how to install it.
4- The old hose: there is oil/grime underneath, I spent 30 min. looking for any holes or cracks. Could not find any! So my theory is...the hose absorbs oil over 100K miles, then developed microscopic holes and leaks enough oil and/or air. There are a few drops of oil on the subframe.
Anyway, reset the MAF code P0101 and will report back if this code goes away or not.

My car is 2005 XC90 2.5T 102K miles...
- Brand-new Bosch MAF.
- Replaced the Hose near the dipstick as mentioned above.
- PCV system is fine (new hose from oil trap to valve cover), no issue when doing vacuum test.
Same issue, code P0101 (MAF code) came back after 50 miles.
Any advice from the guru

Some update...
As mentioned above: new cooler hose, new Bosch MAF, same code P0101.
- Returned Bosch MAF to amazon to get refund (in theory I could have kept it as spare).
- All of a sudden I remember some BMW people have connector corrosion issue.
- I cleaned the CONNECTOR by using small amount of lubricant ("Blaster Multi-Purpose Lubricant" at local auto parts store), insert it in and out a few times to remove any tiny corrosion that may have built up with time. Re-inserted it firmly.
So far...100 miles later no code, car is smooth.
- So instead of cleaning the MAF (which is not that useful IMO), clean the CONNECTOR! You have nothing to lose.
I took some photos from the internet to show you what I did...

Just to CLOSE this thread (PROBLEM SOLVED).
1. The cause of these codes (P0101 and P2188) was NOT the hose I mentioned above, instead it was the dirty Throttle Body.
That hose leaked some oil b/c the rubber softens with time and the seal (where it mates with the plastic pipe) is not tight.
I guess you can tighten the clamp tiny bit and go from there to save $35.
Although a new hose is not a bad idea either.
2. I cleaned the throttle body and wrote a quick DIY below.
Best part is: it is FREE (Gasket is an option) and your labor is FREE!
