Your '97 is essentially a US '98 - Hopefully, this may help:

Look for the PDF link in that string called "Fuse Locations and Legends".

'99's and '00's made a number of changes and might not be the
best electrical diagrams to trouble shop your car with.

i think my faulty rear light turned out to be a red herring, but have identified a dodgy switch on one of the dome lights. i've pulled the dome unit out and am running some tests to see if that is the cause.

thanks very much for that!,

thats very interesting. this is the first time ive seen the nav system referenced in the fuse list.
my fuse box card doesnt mention anything about the nav system anywhere
but this document implies that 15 also runs the control unit and the display unit for the in dash navigation.

if i cant find any evidence of a drain from the lighting system, the nav system is my next port of call!
