Ah, I thought it stood for 'front wheel bearing' but the double 'bearing' threw me off.

It was a bit over-bearing, a race to the bottom, or one could accuse me of needling. The thrust of the matter was still apparently caged.

I just purchased these GMB front hub bearing assemblies, being an issue as of recent years finding any wheel bearings made in America or to American specs for that matter. Tinker use to be a first choice but being outsourced to the Communist Nation of China, really!! Anyway, GMB is an American corporation and has a good rep. I couldn't find any markings on the assembly but it looks /feels solid

Well,

My Timken has an FAG bearing in the box and it says "made in Germany".

FAG is good, actually I bought FAG for our '04 XC70 and it is good but expensive, about double of what I paid for these GMB's. I'm trying these out to see how they hold up, hopefully it's another decent option for Volvo owner's. The pricing is in the middle between premium proven bearings and the cheap garbage coming out of China mostly.

Lugs were not overtightened, I have always properly torqued them to Volvo spec with a torque wrench.
So what do you think caused them to fail? Have you ever had wheels or tires installed at a shop? Have you had the car since new?

I am not sure what caused them to fail to be honest, I have had the car for a year and a half and it has never seen a tire shop in the time I have had it. I have changed the tires with the seasons four times, and had the wheels off a bunch of other times when doing brakes, etc. About the only thing I can think of that might have at least strained the lugs was during an ice storm last year the car slid and hit a curb, it punched in my steel rim, and that had to be replaced, but everything else was fine, and the lugs were used a number of times after that with zero issue. The wheel bearing did turn out to be bad, so I have to wonder if that played a part in the lugs breaking.

OK, so in 20 years, someone may have been taking the car to a tire shop where the lugs could have been damaged and possibly cracked?
