1998 S70--Wrong key inserted in ignition

Post by LuvMy850 »

Hello! I come from a family of Volvo owners. My mom and my sister both have 1998 S70's. My mom accidentally grabbed my sister's ignition key and inserted it into her car. Now my mom's car won't start even with the correct key. A repairman has informed her that Volvo has an anti-theft device that is inside the car that will break if the wrong key or a foreign object is put in the ignition of the car. Is this correct? He said that her car has to be towed into the shop and the part will have to be replaced. Is this true? Is there no simpler way to fix this? My mom really doesn't want to have to pay to have her car towed all the way to the repair shop and then have to pay an additional $400 for the repair. I would appreciate any advice anyone has.

Thanks!

I know from experience on Nissian that if the wrong key or an unknown object is put in then the car has to go to the dealer to have the anti-theft device reprogramed so it is very possible that it is the same with Volvo. Be sure to take all keys to the car because they also have to be reprogramed. As for the towing check with your insurance they covered our tow.

Good Luck

Thanks for the reply! I was hoping that there might be some easy fix that the repairman wasn't aware of. I guess she'll just have to bite the bullet and pay.

Thanks again!

why not phone volvo dealership and ask them what the situation is with the car. Im really not sure if the issue is going to be getting a new ingnition part to match your key because the tumbler is damaged or if something has to be reset.

They should not charge you for that as well you get the information from a certified source.
