Mystery battery drain

Post by bob850 »

I have a slow battery drain on our 1997 850 GLT wagon. I have 13.9 volts at the battery at idle, so the alternator is good. I did a drain test and am drawing 110 mA with the car off. After pulling the radio fuse, it went down to 80 mA. I pulled every single fuse, including the fuses and relays under the screw-off cover, and nothing made the current drop below 80 mA. I also pulled the alternator and starter cables (leaving the B+ cable connected) and nothing changed.

However, when I pulled just the "B+ multi-wire" that goes from the batter to the fuse box, the current dropped to less than 1 mA. So I believe it is something in that chain. What else could it be if none of the individual fuses made the current drop when pulled? What "non-fused" things are connected to the B+ cable that could be causing the current draw? Or are there fuses in another location that I am missing?

I also checked that the glovebox light goes out properly and there were no interior lights left on (the fuse test also confirmed this).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Check resistance on the battery to fusebox cable itself. Those have been known to develop internal resistance and restrict power to electrical accessories in car once it begins to heat itself up under load.

Would that cause parasitic drain while the car is off?

It's uncommon, but it could.

I did some more reading. I'm going to check the starter relay (immobilizer relay?) tonight.

Current will flow through any conductive path. Emphasis on any. Like a dirty battery top cover, will become conductive between both posts and will slowly drain a battery over time. Roads are salted in Indy, correct? Salty dirt will conduct current. You're battery may be clean on top. However the cable itself may not be as wire insulation only acts as thus when clean.

Temp. substitute the multi-wire-cable for a piece of stranded 12-ga wire, then remeasure and see what happens.

Beyond that point, you'll need a schematic to begin disconnecting anything downstream of there to continue your leakage tests.

The battery itself might be bad.

Had this happen on my v40. Those drainage rates aren't that high I don't think. In my case, the battery was simply bad. It held a charge, for a bit anyways. Auto parts store did a charge on it, again, held a charge but ran very hot, so I got a new one. No issues since.

Hope this helps.
