Multiple missfire codes and poor running.

Post by rguzz »

Last few weeks noted rough running with cold starts, lasting maybe 20 seconds, smoothed out and perfect running otherwise. This morning rough running after starting, no delay in start, cleared after 20 seconds, running down the interstate 100 miles or so then CEL and poor running overall. Codes are 1310, 0300, 0303,0305. Sputters, runs very poorly. History is car has oil consumption attributed to bad valve seals, longstanding, with perfect compression last checked 6 mos ago. I swapped out a few things a couple of weeks ago, red FPR, MAF, new Bougicord wires, cleaned cap and rotor (looked fine) but still rough starts in morning otherwise great running. Fuel pump replaced 7-8 years or so ago oem Volvo. Might be 225k miles on the car. I suspect the best clue I have is the poor running after cold starting, intermittent over the last few weeks, suggesting a fuel delivery problem as a likely prospect. Can someone point me to the multiple misfire troubleshooting list so I can get to work, thanks.

Have you checked fuel pressure? When you did wires did you replace the plugs? I'd check for spark, fuel, vacuum stuff and after all that check compression if nothing else pans out.

Fuel pressure seems like a good place to start based on the fact I have essentially been running perfectly throughout the day, with the exception of stumbling and rough running with cold starting. I will definitely pull plugs and inspect for fouling in view of excess oil consumption, but can't imagine a series of plugs would fall at once. Can check compression as well, expecting it will be good, as it has been. Sound reasonable?

The poor running is causing all those misfire codes, those can be ignored.

I would not connect a cold lumpy start to your current problem. Get those plugs out and have a look. Compression will change suddenly when something goes wrong, a 6 month old test is like last years lottery ticket.

Sounds a bit bleak, but plugs will come out and compression test will probably be the first items on the list, as I do not own a fuel pressure gauge.

Are you sure the rear cam seal is not blown and leaking moisture into the cap? Worth checking.

Cap is dry, contacts cleaned and rotor cleaned up as well, oem stuff a year old.

Ah, I thought you had only checked under cap and rotor back before the troubles showed up. Oh well, keep looking then. :)

Basically we all get a set of viking horns in this case, though I was not as quick to get to it. After confirming good spark, # 3 cylinder compression was zero, all other cylinders @ 165. Added oil to the affected cylinder not expecting to see a change and there was none. So, I'll start another thread about what happens after the head is off in terms of how to address all valves, etc. Bummed but not very surprised, this car has been using excess amounts of oil for years and I guess a valve said enough is enough. Oil and coolant look fine.
