Magnet In Oil Pan

Hi there,

This is an idea that i read about years ago so i dont remember all the details, but the basic idea is simple.

A strong rare earth magnet is placed either at the bottom of the oil pan inside or bottom outside. The magnet attracts any iron based metal particles in the oil and this keeps them from circulating with the normal oil flow. This supposedly would keep the oil 'cleaner' over time.

I guess there are different views on this too, such as what happens when enough particles accumulate. If they are not removed they could break off in big chunks and start to clog things up. That would probably mean it would be best to have a way of cleaning those particles out periodically, either manually or with each oil change.

Of course this assumes that most of the particles are iron based and not aluminum.

Anyone have any ideas about this or any other thoughts?

I use a magnetic oil pan drain plug. Always have a little fuzz on the end when I change the oil.

If your drain plug isn't magnetic, try putting a magnet on the oil filter can. Can't hurt.

The oil filter is a good idea since then you can actually remove the metal debris from the engine instead of having it stuck to a magnet in the oil pan.

I would do a drain plug magnet. That way you can clean it every oil change. Additionally, that way there's no chance that an outside magnet could fall off during use and cause a clump of ferrous material to suddenly be circulated while the engine is running.

You can alternate them between the oil filter and fuel line to help mileage too.

Well hey with one of those fuel line magnets i was able to drive up and down the east coast several times on just two gallons of gas

Ha ha, yeah that is funny. The only way i can see a fuel line magnet helping gas mileage is that the driver knows it's there and believes it will do something, and unconsciously modifies their driving habits slightly which changes their gas usage slightly. Most people probably dont see any change, and also, it would not take two months to see a change if any change was really going to happen because there is no memory mechanism that can act to integrate over the total run time with gas usage and refills. Thus the system time constant, if there even was one, would be much faster than two months.

With the oil pan use though that's not intended to increase gas mileage just to help reduce particulate material that might be floating around in the oil. It's also debatable i guess how much comes out with each oil change with and without a strong magnet.

With a magnet on the fuel line I actually noticed that my fuel tank was filling up...
I no longer have to pay for gas

A guy might try TWO fuel line magnets ?
Just be careful that one of them doesn't wind up on the return...
All those savings would cancel out!

I found the metal I collected spontaneously formed a new engine.
