2000 V70 N A base power steering fluid

Post by scot850 »

I was trying to help a nice lady that had offered me her 2000 V70 NA when I advertised for a project car.

I do not know the history of the car but she is the 2nd owner and it has 270,000km on it (about 165,000 miles).

I was not looking for a 2000 model, but she has been taken for a ride by repair shops, but give her due she goes to PnP for parts and used to take her 2 boys with her!

Anyway, while trying to pull any codes for a orange arrow of death, and engine light I checked over the car and found the PS fluid was down to minimum. The 2000 MY handbook says to use 'a quality ATF'. What the hell spec is that?

I read the topic below which speculates which oil to use but typically does not give a definitive answer.

What I do know is I don't know what the fluid is in there just now. As I understand it, it could be an ATF or Pentosin. I believe you should not mix Pentosin and ATF is this correct?

As to ATF Detxron/Mercon III or type F which is the better or least likely to cause an issue with other fluids assuming Pentosin is in there?

Advice please!

Neil.

To my knowledge a 2000 uses Pentosin.

I spoke to one of the parts guys at dealer and he says they only sell the 'green' power steering fluid now (Pentosin?). He used to be a mechanic and he says it is compatible. I am astounded that Volvo just say a 'Quality ATF'. No spec number?

Thanks,

Neil.

I have put everything from power steering fluid with stop leak from the shelf at Dollar General to junk ATF of any kind they have at the gas station and it has all worked. Some oil beats no oil if it's low. I had a buddy blow a steering hose on a Mercruiser out on the lake one day. He was going to cut the belt and fight it back manually but he would have lost the raw water pump. All I had onboard was a quart of Marvel Mystery oil and a half a quart of Amsoil. After patching his fittings back together we mixed the two and it worked fine.

You can pretty much use any ATF... OR the Pentosin hydraulic fluid, but don't mix both. Figure out which one is in there and replace it with that, unless you do a full flush. If you can't tell because the fluid is super brown, you should flush it anyway. There are good tutoirials on how to do that.
