1998 V70 T-5 door chime question?

I think I am going madder. The possible (but now rejected) 'new' project car has a strange quirk that may be normal but I'm curious. Now all the Volvos I have owned with the door chimes, only chimed (that I recall) when the door is open with the key in the ignition. This car chimes even without the key in the ignition with the door open. Is that a fault or is it something that can be altered?

I think there have been threads on this. Whenever you pull the key, if the switch is a bit gummy, the switch which detects the presence of the key sticks and...voila.

Maybe a shot of silicone spray into the key switch?

I have an issue with this. here's what triggers it: when removing the key from the ignition, the ignition should "click" or "lock" into place, keeping it from spinning. If that doesn't happen (should be easy to notice, as the key slot will be aligned with the position I marking), then your ignition switch will think there is a key still in it. This has never set of my alarm when locking or unlocking the car on the outside.

You are correct on the fact the ignition switch feels 'sloppy' with no positive clicks between settings. That was my thought too, but now glad that my insanity is not getting much worse!

I've had that issue with my S70 and when it rears its ugly head I know it's time to spray silicone in the key tumbler again.

Tried some silicon oil but no different. It definitely does not feel right and positive when it is turned.

Used a fair amount of silicon spray oil in the ignition barrel through the key slot and eventually the mechanism released so there are now clear 'clicks when the key is turned to each position and then again when removed.

I haven't tested if the door chimes is still working all the time as the battery is weak and I'm charging it so the owner can start the car hopefully tonight when he comes to retrieve it.

I've had that happen a few times. Ding keeps going even after I remove the key. It's probably just the finicky ignition switch.
