Coolant temperatures?

Thanks to my new scantool (ElmScan 5) i know too much about my car and beginning to worry about operating tempertures.



So would you think its normal for my coolant temperature to be around 200-210 F degrees. I've used a coolant checker and determined that my coolant boils around 220F... and it seems as if its getting awfully close to that mark. I'm running a 92c thermostat.

I've changed my radiator, thermostat and ECT sensor about 9 months ago and now begin to wonder if this Peak Long Life coolant I poured in is really working or not (because it got mixed with old coolant). I've heard on bobistheoilguy.com forums that this Peak Long Life coolant is a variation of dexcool which now has me worried. I will probably go ahead and do a flush soon, with some Zerex G-05, which I heard is pretty good....

So what do you think about my operating temperature?

I'm running a 92c thermostat.

92C equals 197.6F

Are you sure you installed a 92C t-stat? Volvo OEM is 90C (roughly 195F). Personally, I run a Wahler 87C/190F in my own car.

210 is about right for a modern engine.
Antifreeze doesn't boil until a whole lot hotter than that, 250-260 I think

Yeah it is a 92c thermostat, thats what I got from FCP and thats what was stamped on it.

I bought one of those lil eye dropper like testers, the one with the lil balls inside and how many that float show the boiling temp.

I'm still going to do a coolant flush... something that i've been meaning to do for a while now.

A thermostat does not start to open until its rated temp 92C (197.6F)
So the coolant temp will never be at this rating but always a bit higher.

Keep in mind that the cooling system is under pressure which raises the boiling point.
