Where to get the best tire deals?

Post by MadeInJapan »

So I post here because my son needs tires for his S60 and it's an odd size: 235/45/17 (Tucana wheels). The Michelin's (Pilot of some sort) on it have been superb but they are worn out and getting a comparable Michelin will cost him at least a grand after mounting/balancing, tire disposal and some other crazy state fee. I always thought that tirerack does price matching but they do not. Their prices are good but after shipping...well, maybe not as good as they seem- still I've used them for probably 15 years consistently. I found in the touring class a tire that is pretty decent in all of its ratings- General Altimax RT43. We have the Perelli's whose rating in this grand touring class to be just above the General's on our V70 and love the ride feel, quietness and the even wear...just that they are $30 more a tire compared to the Generals and my son's budget is limited... So I've been shopping around to see if anyone offers a better deal. It seems that Simpletire does offer a better deal if you consider their "free shipping," but then if you buy their road hazard (included with tirerack purchases now), it's a wash out. There is a local shop that only charges $21 for mount/balance and all the fees so it would be worth having the tires cheaper in hand!!

So, where has everyone been buying tires from? Where are the best deals? Or is it better to stay with the tried and true tirerack?

Btw, I'm looking to buy a spare Tucana wheel (17") so we can have a real tire for a spare rather than the donut. Anyone looking and know of a good used Tucana- not chromed? I doesn't have to be pretty!!

Looking for the cheapest, you never know what you are getting... I was looking for the cheapest Sachs struts/shocks, and got two times quality inspect rejects.. Not tires but might still apply In Canada we have plenty of used tires on sites such as craiglists or kijiji. With some attention, it's easy to find quality tires

I had Altimax winter tires in two sizes, SUV and S60, both were among the worst winter tires I had (yet most reviews say they are great)

I just put Cooper cs5 ultras on my v70 and they're great. The michelins I took off were crap, it's not always about the highest price being the best option. I ordered from discount tire and they had a $50 off sale plus $70 back from Cooper. If you can catch their sales at times that the manufacturer also has rebates, you can get a great deal.

Not a bad tire.
One of my XCs came with those and I drove it for a while. Very smooth and quiet, but I don't know how good they are in the size he needs or if that tire is even made in 235/45/17

Btw, I looked up the Coopers and I can get them shipped to me via Amazon Prime for a decent price in the right size! 94W bothers me a bit...the tires I was looking at had at least 97W...isn't that how stiff the side wall is? Btw, only one review and it's 5 stars by a guy driving a C70.

Not trying to cheap out but better reviews than any other tire in the size I'm needing- what do you all think?

Don't know if you guys know about or have tried "Wikibuys." You load their software up on your browser and they search better deals when you go to Amazon or most other on-sale sites and search to see if there's a better deal. Through them, I can buy the BFGoodrich g-Force COMP-2 A/S All-Season Radial Tire - 235/45ZR17/XL 97W for $114.56 a tire (shipping included, no tax). The only problem is that it might take a month to get them. Anyone here have an opinion on the BFG's? Tried them? Tirerack rates them above the Conti DWS06's in their over-all rating in the Ultra High Performance All Season's. Thanks for any opinions on these tires. As you know, even if TR think's they're great on Mustangs and Acura's, that doesn't mean they are going to perform well on our Volvo's.
