01 XC70/83000K: HELP!! Door to Gas Cap won't open!

Yesterday after filling the tank, the door to gas cap wouldn't close completely... nothing was lodged preventing it from closing EXCEPT for this small cross bar inside the recessed compartment that the prong from the door frame should fit into... I had to get somewhere important, and I couldn't do anything to make that small cross bar move, so when I got to my destination and ready to enter the bldg, I took a last glance at the gas-cap door and it looked completely shut. Not until a few minutes ago, when I went to my car in the garage and tried to open the door to see if that cross bar had moved or whatever, to allow the door to shut all the way, that I COULDN'T ge tthe door to open at all! After all the driving I did today, I'll need to fill up again tomorrow, HOW CAN I OPEN IT and what initially happened to prevent it from shutting in the first place, and why is it seemingly locked shut???

Feelin like a real dope!

Ummm, the gas-cap door wouldn't open because the car was locked. Nevertheless, I wonder why that small cross-bar failed to recess yesterday, thereby preventing the door from closing completely... apparently once I starting driving the car, it must've recessed on its own. Now, after I opened the gas-cap door and looked into that recessed compartment, the cross-bar cannot be seen or felt, so it must be where it should be, but would still like to know why that happened. Any feedback is appreciated!

They are just made to open, allow the door to close all the way and then lock once you drive about 10 feet. Don't know why but it's that way on our later model V70 as well.
