My alternator went on my 92 240,Got one at the yard put in on and checked battery not charging so i took it off and went to autozone had it tested they said it passed so i put in on again still no charge. The tester reads 12.5v with engine off and drops to 12v when i start the engine.checked the ground and found it was worn threw in one spot fixed that and thought i had it figured out started it and same thing drops to 12v!!! I also checked it on the altenator it self and same thing.I took the alternator off again and am having someone else test it! Any advice on any thing it could be if it checks out o.k.?
Thanks for any help...........Ron
1992 240 alternator problem!!!!!!!
What were the symptoms that caused you to beleive that your original alternator failed? Were they different? Does your warning light work?
I experienced a similar problem on earlier models of the 240 series. I learned that the charge light bulb filament must be good or those symptoms would appear. Changed the bulb and whadda ya know!

as noted above with key on (engine off) the alternator warning light must be on. If light is out then alternator will not charge. This warning light circuit supplies the initial 12v to energise the alternator. Replace bulb, this should fix the problem.
