Getting permission to tap the balls made it possible for me to get this back together and I could easily do it again. I tapped the balls with the handle of a screwdriver with a rubber grip. It made a nice tapper and it didn't take much persuasion.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should go forward with this project. The little bit of watery grease I left in the inner joint probably doesn't matter much since one of the functions of grease is to hold water. There is 190 g of fresh grease and maybe 10 g of the old watery grease that I couldn't clean out. If this really matters that much I can easily and cheaply correct it by cleaning and re-greasing the inner joint, not that I really want to do that.

However I made what I think is a big mistake on the outer joint. I carefully marked the original position of the cup, the cage, and the inner star with a sharpie (no white out at our house for years) so I could realign them when reassembling. I also kept track of which bearing went into which positions in the star, starting at the marked spot and working clockwise - I put the balls in paper cups with numbers on them. I took everything apart and was doing well until I couldn't get it reassembled. I spent 4 hours trying to get it back together and the alignment mark eventually came off the cage and I lost track of which balls went where in my frustration of trying to get it all back together.

Tonight I decided to reassemble it because even if I buy a new OE axle I'll need an OE core and the one currently installed on my car is aftermarket. Tonight I learned that the cage has a chamfered edge on one surface and plain flat edge on the other. Apparently it matters which way this goes in the cup (chamfer on the inner side or outer side) - not sure. If the alignment mark hadn't worn off it would be self evident but I don't know the answer and only noticed the difference this evening. Does anyone know? I've found one picture on the internet and it shows the plain edge on the inner side. It didn't seem to matter when doing the reassembly but I'm sure that its different on one side for a reason.

Also, since I no longer have the original alignment/configuration of the cage and bearings I'm concerned about the shaft being unbalanced. It would have been better to maintain the original alignment but my frustration got the best of me and I didn't. Will balance be a real issue or is it a non- issue?

I provided a lot of information in my last post so I could get an informed answer, but let me summarize my biggest 2 concerns here.

1) Does the chamfered edge on the cage go up or down when your reassembling it? I've seen photos here that show it both ways.

2) I lost track of the original cage orientation and also the original 6 bearing positions due to my marks wearing off. Will this cause a balance problem?

I guess I'm on my own with this.
