Outside Rear View Mirror Replacement. 1987 744

Passenger side mirror is cracked. Someone gave me a stack of new mirror glass and I'm hoping one will fit. How do I get the mirror housing apart?

Electrically operated?

There is no need to remove the mirror housing from the car.

Press the bottom of the glass inwards until you can see the retaining ring teeth through the hole in the top of the housing.

Using a small screwdriver prise the teeth to move the ring in an anti-clockwise direction when looking at the glass. This releases the retaining ring from the mounting plate.

Remove the glass and retaining ring, disconnecting the heating wires if fitted.

Fitting is the reverse of the above but, if it is a Volvo glass it will be marked 'Unten' (bottom). Guess where that goes!!

The last time I had a cracked glass I went to a parts shop and bought a self adhesive glass for very little money and stuck that over the original. A lot less work.

Thanks Bill. That does sound easier but I have 8 genuine Volvo glasses, 4 regular and 4 wide angle,so I will use your instructions to release the old one.

P.S. The 87 740 came with plain glass in both sides, later models have the wide angle glass in the passenger side. Can I put the wide angle glass in the 87?

I don't see why not. Is the wide angle not compulsory on newer cars? Those I have hired in the US have always had wide angle on the passenger side with a written warning on them.
