Snow tires would solve your problem, no AWD needed here. Of course, AWD and snow tires and your golden.
There is no magic about it, traction is what makes the difference. Which is also true when you want to slow down, and AWD doesn't help you in that scenario.

FWD may have troubles climbing up even with winter tires, because frontend gets unloaded a lot and does not provide enough weight for good traction. My wife's ex-V70 wasn't good at parking in front of garage with slight incline in sleet weather, good winter tires did little. XC70 had no problems of course, even on crappy all-season.

I drove my fwd S60 and an Audi Q5 (awd) for two winters. Both on the same winter tire brand. The only moment where the Audi got me out of trouble was a steep road uphill in heavy snow. That's where all fwd or rwd cars equipped with winter tires may get stuck, especially if they come to a stop. I remember large S series Mercedes (rwd) stuck there with wealthy guys perplexed

I should show you her driveway. Also, where she lives, the road doesn't get plowed for about half a mile.

For that road uphill that isn't plowed I would indeed get an awd with winter tires on all wheels. I believe 2006-2009 Volvo (S60, V70 with awd and XC70) had the better awd system. Plus, the XC70 has a clear advantage in deeper snow because the S60 and V70 are quite low to the ground and may 'sit' on the snow and loose traction.

Ok, so after pulling teeth for a few days, she has purchased a 2006 S60 AWD from a friend of ours who's mother recently passed. She was an elderly woman so the car only has 55k miles and was always dealer serviced. And Abscate, that is 40 degree weather in the picture. Wait until it gets below freezing and starts snowing. Also, the driveway looks a lot less mean in the picture than in person. Her worry is if she over accelerates and goes of the edge. I tell her to move, and she doesn't listen. Personally, I enjoy a challenge, but she is in a Volvo and that makes me happy. Thanks

That is one of a kind find, congratulations! I remember early AWD were having troubles at the haldex, not sure if this 2006 had the improved design or not. An AWD spline wear inspection and fluid change along with a transmission fluid change are good investments for this vehicle (even though Volvo says no need to service the transmission).
